Wow, how the times have changed! Like Water for Chocolate – Striking and sensuous film from a novel by Laura Esquivel set in the early part of the 20th century – a young girl’s life is conditioned by her solemn and unyielding mom, who treats her terribly. Magnificent storyline, not without humor, with an excellent cast and a top of the line performance from lead actress Cavazos. Cast includes Lumi Cavazos, Marco Leonardi, Regina Tome, Mario Ivan Martinez, and Ada Carrasco. (113 minutes,’92)

The Indian in the Cupboard – A boy (Scardino) receives an ancient chest as a birthday gift, and discovers that when he sets a toy Indian inside and turns the key, the Indian comes to life. Then he sees that the Indian is not a toy, but a genuine person. Difficulties follow, particularly while his best pal summons to life a toy cowboy. Cast includes Hal Scardino, Lindsay Crouse, Richard Jenkins, Rishi Bhat, and Nestor Serrano. (96 minutes,’95)

The All-American Boy – Cluttered drama in reference to Olympic hopeful Voight’s endeavor to be a triumphant boxer; striking locations of northern California, but that’s all. Cast includes Jon Voight, Ned Glass, Anne Archer, and Carol Androsky. (104 minutes,’89)

Airheads – 3 metal heads with toy guns reluctantly take a radio station hostage, wanting to get play for their one and only demo tape. Not exactly the most demanding subject to mock, although the script is weak anyway. A fairly vigorous direction and compact running time help a tad. (91 minutes,’94)

Aladdin – Disney’s animated Arabian Days storyline is polished through the sensibility of an old Warner Bros. animation, as Aladdin brings up a Genie who’s exploding with shtick. Williams’ uproarious fast fire shtick forms the attraction of this alternatively conventional tale, colorfully (and tunefully) shown. Cast includes Voices of Scott Weinger, Robin Williams, Linda Larkin, Jonathan Freeman, Frank Welker, Gilbert Gottfried, Douglas Seale and the harmonizing voices of Brad Kand and Lea Salonga. (90 minutes,’92)

Afurika Monogatari – Guide Sayer crashes his aircraft in wilds of Africa and comes upon a game conserve. Even old Jimmy is dreary. The film was filmed in Kenya. Cast includes James Stewart, Philip Sayer, Eleanora Vallone, and Heekura Simba. (120 minutes,’81)
